No new spelling words...Study Core Word List   (back to home)
Did you know...I send home corrected spelling tests on Mondays.  I have discovered that some students are not showing these to their parents.  Be aware that this is the regular procedure.

I will not be giving new words this week.  We are a little ahead on spelling units so our focus will be entirely on the Core Word List.

ENTIRE CORE WORD LIST IS POSTED ON THE HOMEPAGE!!

FYI
Each Monday I give the students their spelling list for the week.  They write each of the words three times on the study sheet they keep at school and three times on the sheet they take home.  This allows them to study at home or at school.  The study sheet that goes home should be in the Famous Traveling MR Folder.  I also sent home a list of all the second grade core words on a bright orange sheet of paper.  Students can study from that list anytime.

Spelling Words and Philosophy

About half of our weekly spelling list focuses on Second Grade Core (Priority) Words.  These are considered "No Excuse" words.  All second graders are expected to accurately spell this list in it's entirety by the end of the year.  They should spell them correctly in the context of their writing.  Some words may appear on the test or in the weekly list more than once.

The most difficult spelling skill is the transfer of knowledge from a spelling list to actual writing. This is the reason for the nontraditional spelling tests.  These Cloze Tests as well as sentence dictation provide an opportunity for students to demonstrate their ability to spell words in the context of meaningful sentences as opposed to a list.

Spelling Test Grading Policy

There are five skills being assessed on the weekly tests which are graded separately.  There is a grade given for the 12-14 spelling words found in the Cloze (Fill in the blank) Test.  There is another unofficial grade given for the skill being assessed directly below the Cloze Test.  On the back side you will see a grade for Conventions (caps and punctuation for all five sentences), Dictation (sentences), and finally, the Bonus Word, which should be spelled correctly twice.   Students are not held accountable for some words, which will be indicated by the letters NC (no count) over the words. The NC words will be corrected.
