On Reinforcements and Rewards   (back to home)

Both kids and adults seem to respond best to speech therapy when it's fun, active, lively, and applicable. Students who offer their best efforts in speech-language classes are rewarded with a treasure chest prize each month. Sometimes speech-language students will earn other rewards such as ice cream socials, popcorn parties, and other fun things, There is a lot to be said for verbal praises, smiles, and a positive nod. All of these things can be incorporated at home too when you see a good effort, a self-correction, or "good speech." Nothing is learned all at once and perfection is not the key element in therapy...just small steps and a slide in the right direction.
