We have been working on writing summaries for fiction and non-fiction text.  Students have worked hard learning to write the main ideas in a topic sentence, sharing briefly the main events and stating the author's message and purpose. Students need to be careful to not just rewrite the entire story.  The summary must be in their own words.  We will continue to write summaries throughout the year.  Your child will be bringing  home their summary for The Babe and I  by David Adler please contact me if you have any questions. 

How can you help you child at home with a summary?
1.After reading at home ask them to tell you about the three main events.  
        Make sure they state them in a specific and brief manner. 
2. You can even ask them to give you the message or purpose of a TV show or movie.
3.  If they like to read the comics have them state the main idea in one sentence for their favorite
